A movie produced in Alaska is showing in Kenai and has gained significant popularity in the month since its premiere.

Moose the Movie was written by Alaskan cartoonist Chad Carpenter and his brother, filmed in Palmer and released to a Wasilla theater April 24; now it’s scheduled in Colorado, Washington, Utah, and Oregon.

Carpenter: “My first goal was just to do a fun project that we could put on DVD, that was the extent of what I thought it would do and then we got into our first theater here in Wasilla, the Valley Cinema, and it did so well there that other theaters started to notice so we started getting more and more opportunities to go into other theaters because of that. It was supposed to be a two week run here at the Valley Cinema and I was just told that they’re going to run it for the fifth week not because it’s doing so well.”

Carpenter is known for his classically Alaskan Tundra Comics which he’s drawn for 24 years, and said he wanted to try a new creative and funny project through a new medium.

He added that working with Alaskans showcased how talented locals are.

Carpenter: “It’s amazing how much talents are around these parts, we didn’t really have to go outside to find anybody to do any of this project for us. We did have a couple folks from Los Angeles in the movie but that’s mainly because they are friends of ours. It’s 99% local that’s for sure.”

Moose the Movie is currently in Kambe theater in Kenai and will show through Thursday, May 21.
