Quarantine Established for Invasive Plant Species

The Alaska Division of Agriculture signed a quarantine into effect banning the import, transport, sale, or distribution of two types of Elodea and three other invasive aquarium plants.

 

As we previously reported, Rep. Kurt Olson, Rep. Mike Chenault, and Rep. Paul Seaton jointly sponsored House Bill 344 as a measure to work on the current Elodea problem that is choking out some Alaskan lakes.

 

The Division of Agriculture is also working to amend current Plant Health and Quarantine Regulations and adding Canadian Waterweed, Western Nuttallii, Brazillian Waterweed, Hydrilla, and Eurasian Watermilfoil to the Noxious Weed listing.

 

The Division of Agriculture’s Establishment of Quarantine stated any of the following plants found will either be shipped out of state or disposed of by burning.
