Residents can expect to see smoke columns burning within the fire perimeter for the next few weeks.
Currently the acreage of the fire is 196,618 with 60% containment and the recent rainfall of the last few days has greatly reduced fire growth.
Areas of smoldering tundra were observed in the southeast flank of the fire, at Bear Creek, east of Tustumena Lake. Fire behavior was monitored on the eastern flank for structures at risk on the west side of Skilak Lake and the east side of Tustumena Lake.
Fire resources will work to suppress fire flare ups in the pockets of unburned fuel within the fire perimeter.
Forty six crew members are still assigned to the fire as part of the Type 1 crew along with two excavators and two helicopters.
The Funny River fire is likely to smolder all summer. It began May 19 on a horse trail five miles east of Soldotna and has been determined to have been human caused however the exact cause is still yet to be determined.
Mop up and repair of the suppression impacts of fire lines within the refuge continues. Demobilization of personnel and supplies from the incident is ongoing.
