The recently passed Kenai ballot proposition 2, which allows City Council to cancel upcoming meetings, created questions and disagreements among councilors Wednesday night.
Mayor Pat Porter motioned to cancel the November 18 council meeting during her mayor’s report, which Councillors questioned since the action had not had the opportunity to be publicly reviewed.
After the body approved that Mayor Porter did have that authority under the newly enacted initiative, council member Terry Bookey stated his disappointment with the lack of public process.
Cm. Bookey: “Here’s an example, we’re going to go ahead, with no notice whatsoever and just decide that we don’t have to do business and there’s nobody here that can discuss on it because it’s hidden in the mayor’s report.”
Vice Mayor Brian Gabriel spoke up saying he understood his fellow council members’ concerns and motioned to postpone the cancellation to make it an agenda item during the November 4 meeting.
