This Saturday the Red Cross of Alaska is partnering with local fire response agencies to install fire detectors in Kenai Peninsula residents’ homes as part of their Home Fire Campaign.
Regional Communications Officer Beth Bennett…
Bennett: “The original goal for the program, the Home Fire Campaign is to install as many smoke alarms and educate the public as much as possible about the importance of home fire safety, evacuation plans and making sure that everybody in the household is aware of what those plans are. The main goal is to lower home fire death and injury by 25 percent over the next five years.”
Bennett says volunteers to assist installing smoke alarms are still welcome, as are applicants interested in getting a free smoke alarm.
Bennett: “We do have a phone number which is 907-301-5476, or they can go to our website, we do have a lot of information on the left hand side where you can learn more about the Home Fire Campaign or you can sign up for a free smoke alarm as well.”
Volunteers will meet at 9 am Saturday, March 19 at the Beacon Training Center behind Walmart.
Bennett says one area the Kenai Fire Department deemed a priority is the Lilac Lane area which saw the worst damage during January’s Earthquake. Red Cross teams will be in the area going door to door.
