Remember Burn Suspension During Hot Weekend Weather

A burn suspension is still in place as we enter into a sunny weekend.

The Card Street Fire rests at 8,876 acres and is 95% contained, its recent memory constantly reminding Kenai Peninsula residents to be cautious while vegetation is dry.

The Division of Forestry’s Andy Alexandrou gave us an update on the fire…

Alexandrou: “The entire fire has been looked at by the air by an IR scan, that’s an infrared scan that detects heat sources on the ground. Things are very cold along the perimeter.”

He said that last 5% not contained on the fire is in a sensitive wetlands area near the inlet of the Kenai River on Skilak Lake and Forestry did not want to impact it.

As for the burn suspension…

Alexandrou: “They can have a gas fire, they can have charcoal briquettes, a warming fire, a cooking fire, just as long as it’s not bigger than three feet by three feet, that’s the maximum size. And we can’t emphasize enough that folks need to make sure to put campfires out when they leave.”

Alexandrou said Forestry has been responding to unattended campfires still burning all week.

Debris burning and bonfires are still prohibited.
