Remember Busy Local Elections Amidst State and Presidential Voting

This fall will be a huge election season with Alaskans voting on presidential and state candidates, but we shouldn’t forget about local elections.

In the City of Kenai, the offices currently held by Mayor Pat Porter, Vice Mayor Brian Gabriel and Council Member Terry Bookey will open.

Soldotna has three council members whose terms are up as of this October: Regina Daniels in Seat D, Keith Baxter in Seat E, and Tim Cashman in Seat F.

Baxter has filed his letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission and will run for the House District 30 seat which is currently held by incumbent Representative Kurt Olson. Olson has also filed a letter of intent. Kenai City Manager Rick Koch registered as a candidate for the seat representing House District 30.

Soldotna Councilman Cashman was appointed to Seat F last October for a one year term. He replaced Pete Sprague on the council when Sprague was elected as mayor following former Mayor Nels Anderson’s departure.

And finally, three terms on the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly are expiring: the Central Peninsula District’s Brent Johnson, Soldotna District’s Dale Bagley and Nikiski District’s Wayne Ogle.

Candidate packets become available in July and the filing period begins in August. The last day to register to vote or update your voter registration in order to vote in the October municipal elections is September 9.
