Following this weekend’s “Fall Back”, the Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety reminds you to change all of your smoke alarm and Carbon Monoxide detector batteries.
Kenai Fire Marshall Tommy Carver says their firefighters have been visiting local schools to help children remind their parents.
Carver: “We quizzed the kids on this all during the month of October and we’re trying to tell them, ‘When your parents change your clocks, it’s time to change your smoke detector batteries.’ Because we want families to do that twice a year and that’s a perfect time to do it so when you change your clocks, change your smoke detector batteries. And don’t forget your CO detectors as well.”
It is recommended that you test all of your smoke alarms at least once each month and if you have any doubt regarding the working condition of a Smoke or CO Alarm, replace it.
You should also replace your smoke alarms with new devices every 10 years.
