Republicans are critical of Democrats in the U.S. Senate over possible changes in filibuster rules. The Democrats have been trying to pass two federal voting rights bills with a simple majority. Sixty votes are needed, normally, to push forth the legislation, and the senate bills don’t have a chance to pass unless the majority Democrats change the filibuster rules.
Alaska U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski spoke on the Senate floor about the importance of protecting minority rights in the Senate, and to the consequences of weakening the legislative filibuster to a 50-vote, majority-serving threshold:
President Biden addressed voting rights in Atlanta Tuesday while urging the Senate to change the filibuster rule that’s been stalling it:
“Debate them. Vote. Let the majority prevail and if that bare minimum is blocked, we have no option to but to change the Senate rule including getting rid of the filibuster for this.”
