Republicans Add Education, Union Funding Into Budget

House Republicans have offered an olive branch to the Minority…

Speaker Mike Chenault said the House also added funding for labor union contracts. Chenault is hoping the minority will agree and authorize access to the Constitutional Budget Reserve.

The union increases also are contingent upon Gov. Bill Walker vetoing legislation that repeals increases for workers not covered by unions.

The administration would take a $29.8-million hit, which Walker’s budget director said would result in more position losses and layoffs.

If it garners the support of Democrats, the bill will head to the Senate for approval.
