The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly passed a resolution supporting the request to the Department of Public Safety for a Trooper post in Nikiski.
Assemblyman Wayne Ogle said he did hear from one Nikiski resident who stated they were not in support of the request.
Asm. Ogle: “And I promised them I would put that on the record that it’s not all 100% on.”
The resolution did pass unanimously and Ogle said for the most part he has heard support for the relocation Troopers to Nikiski.
Ann Krogseng has been at the forefront of the community crackdown on crime, working with local and state lawmakers. She said that the Nikiski Community Action Group is not just waiting for the Department of Public Safety to make their decision; At last night’s Nikiski Community Council meeting Krogseng said the group’s subcommittee on crime submitted a rough draft of an alternative option in case the trooper relocation is denied.
Krogseng: “And getting back to them with our recommendation which is we think we need a Law Enforcement Service Area and so then Wayne Ogle will once again, once it’s refined and we’ve got a few of the details worked out, will present that also to the assembly. That one, should the assembly approve it, then would go to the voters in October unless there’s a special election which I don’t think anyone’s going to do.”
She said that alternative would ask Nikiski residents if they support a law enforcement service area where a Nikiski board would be created to decide whether the law enforcement would be conducted by a newly created department or by contracting with an existing law enforcement agency
