Alaska voters in 1998 approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between one man and a woman. Last fall, a federal judge struck down that ban as unconstitutional.
The high court plans to take up several gay marriage cases next month and decide whether same-sex couples nationwide have a right to marry.
