The Don E. Gilman River Center on Funny River Road will get necessary maintenance thanks to $49,000 appropriated by the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Tuesday night.
The ordinance stated that $90,000 is available for maintenance and Borough Mayor Mike Navarre says some of the required work had to be done before the assembly could appropriate the funds.
Mayor Navarre: “It needed some roof work and some gutter work because it was getting some icing on it. It just needed some heat tape in the gutters and it also had some roof damage so what we were doing was just some maintenance just to make sure that we don’t see bigger problems with water migration into the building from roof problems.”
The total roof and gutter work is estimated to cost around $14,000.
The estimated cost of $35,000 for painting the exterior of the River Center is also included in the funds appropriated by the assembly.
The building was constructed in 2000 and the responsibility of services are shared by the State of Alaska, Kenai Peninsula Borough, Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
