The Seward Highway will close for about an hour early Tuesday morning while crews blast approximately 87,000 cubic yards of materials to widen the road.

Shannon McCarthy with the Department of Transportation said the road will close from around 3:00 am to 4:00 am.

McCarthy: “Mile 99 to 100 improvements and it’s rehabilitating the pavement along that stretch of road and actually widening the highway for a passing lane for the northbound traffic.”

That project will widen the current highway around 34-38 feet.

McCarthy said right now is the peak of 2015’s construction season and drivers should remember to give themselves an additional 30 minutes to an hour to get to their destinations.

McCarthy: “This is actually the most significant year we’ve had in DOT history for construction, both in terms of the number of projects and the volume of contract payments so it’s a pretty significant year.”

There is over $330 millionin projects this season.
