Road Work Starts on Swanson River Road, Scheduled to Reopen Tomorrow

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has closed access to a small section of Swanson River Road but the temporary road work should be complete by this weekend.

Deputy Refuge Manager Steve Miller…

Miller: “About a couple hundred yards before the end of the road there at Swanson River Landing, we are going to be placing a culvert, they’ve already started work this morning. The last couple hundred yards of that road is going to be closed all day today, and it will reopen at some point around noon tomorrow. In preparation for the holiday weekend coming up we’re hoping to get everything done. The reason that we’re doing it is to replace this culvert, there’s a drainage issue there, and then we’re going to be resurfacing that road, putting additional gravel down in June.”

He says the Refuge knows that with our mild winter camping has been going on for a while, that’s why the work was scheduled during the week.

Miller: “You know, unfortunately where we had to replace the culvert is just before you get to the campground there so we were trying to get the word out so we didn’t have to kick anybody out of the campground but it will be open for this weekend.”

The upcoming re-graveling project that Miller spoke about is slated to begin the week of June 6.
