Russian River Sanctuary Opening to Sockeye Sport Fishing Tomorrow

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is opening the Russian River Sanctuary to sockeye salmon fishing and upping sockeye limits in that area tomorrow.

 

As of 8:00 am, June 23, the Russian River Sanctuary will open to sport sockeye salmon fishing.

 

Also beginning at 12:01 am June 23, sockeye bag limits will increase to six fish and possession limit will increase to 12 in the Russian River and a section of the Upper Kenai mainstream from Skilak Lake to 600 feet downstream of Russian River Falls.

 

The department has determined that the early-run sockeye salmon biological escapement goal of 22,000-42,000 will be exceeded this season.

 

Over 26,000 sockeye salmon had passed the Russian River weir as of noon today(Monday, June 22).

 

Sport fishing is expected to remain good to excellent for the next several days according to the department.
