Homer Electric Association (HEA) has received reports from members regarding suspicious email correspondence this week.
Bruce Shelley, Director of Member Relations for Homer Electric Association reminds members to be aware of potential scams and fraudulent emails impersonating HEA and requesting information. “We got a call from a gentleman who received an email that was asking for personal information. The email was addressed from HEA. That sort of relaxes people into thinking we’re asking for personal information. We don’t use that type of approach for billing.”
The scam email requests verification of account information, address, phone number and other personal information by clicking on a link for confirmation. Do not click on the link. This email did not come from Homer Electric.
Shelley said the scammers are trying to prey upon your kindness during the holiday season. “They always seem to focus around dividend check time, holidays, times when things are upside-down with the economy, and COVID. People are relaxed, the scammers are focused on the event of the day.”
Shelley says to take precautions this holiday and to be scam savvy. “Again, the best advice we can give you is to hang up that phone and call directly back to HEA and ask whether or not there is an issue with your account.”
