Scholarships Available To High School Seniors Pursuing Medical Degree

The Central Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary is now accepting applications for their 2020 high school senior scholarships.

The scholarships are awarded to any high school senior in the hospital’s service area that is seeking a medical degree. There will be two scholarships awarded at $4,000 each, payable at $1,000 per year for four years.

Jim Childers, volunteer coordinator at Central Peninsula Hospital, discusses why these scholarships not only benefit the recipients, but also the peninsula as a community: “We really are just trying to help people that are looking to get into a medical profession that might be returning them to the community so they can help us. We’ve actually helped some pretty good doctors. Some of the medical professionals returned back to the area.”

He also says that these scholarships are not necessarily reserved for the head-of-the-class, that they want anyone interested in medicine to grab an application: “We target kids that are not at the top ten percent of their class. The reason for that is that we feel that a lot of these kids who are at the top of their class, they’re really getting scholarships from other areas a lot of the time, and we want to help kids that are not as likely to get a scholarship to get help.”

Applications can be picked up at the Care Package Gift shop at the hospital between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. on March 20.
