School Board members have directed Kenai Peninsula Borough School District administration to begin work on the peninsula’s transportation contract which expires in 2017.
Board member Dan Castimore says they asked the district to start so early in order to identify if there is a cheaper way for peninsula bus schedules to be executed.
Castimore: “So it’s a long process so we are directing administration, they asked us basically to let them produce a RFP (request for proposal). So basically we’re going to put that contract out to bid.”
The board would like to see two sets of requests for proposals. One would look at the cost of keeping the current system where Homer has a single-tier bus schedule and the rest of the peninsula has a two-tier system which Castimore explained…
Castimore: “We start school at 7:30 or 7:45 am for the high schools and like 8:45 am for the elementary or lower grades. In Homer all the schools start at the exact same time so you have to have one bus for every student whereas here you have one bus for every two students.”
The second RFP would identify the costs of switching all KPBSD schools to the two tier system.
