The KPBSD School Board listened to a presentation on distict healthcare during a work session earlier.

Colleen Savoie with Parker, Smith and Feek, an insurance consultation firm in Anchorage…

Savoie: “We were talking about the impacts of the Affordable Care Act and some of the opportunities to control costs in light of the Affordable Care Act going forward.”

In 2015 Employer Shared Responsibility Requirements will take effect and looking further out the Cadillac Tax will take effect in 2018.

Savoie said the cadillac tax may be particularly detrimental if not prepared for.

Savoie: “And it’s an excise tax, a 40% excise tax, on the value of health coverage above certain thresholds, and so in 2018 we want to make sure that health plans does not exceed those thresholds if at all possible. One of the ways to mitigate that is to carve out the dental and vision coverage, another way to mitigate that is to offer different health care options such as a high deductible health plan which could be coupled with a Health Savings Account or a Health Reimbursement Arrangement”

The board brought forward a variety of questions and will have additional meetings to discuss what healthcare plans should be proposed for the FY 16.
