At today’s KPBSD School Board work session a presentation of district-wide school pool usage was given.
Assistant Superintendent Dave Jones gave the power point presentation to the School Board as well as to the principals of the schools with pools.
That presentation included a comparison of detailed information of schedules, hours of usage by students for instruction as well as for extracurricular activities, and usage by community members.
Jones pointed out that while it is true that the districts pools operate at an overall deficit, it is not unusual for that to be the case in school operated pools and the benefits the communities who use the pools receive very important benefits to their quality of life.
He drove home that point by saying what he sees in the rather large deficit is that kids are learning to swim ergo not drowning as there are many bodies of water on the Kenai Peninsula.
The pools operated by the district are supported by the General Fund and expenditures charged to that fund include pool managers, pool supervisors, some custodian salaries, benefits, and some utility costs.
A couple suggestions made in the presentation to increase the district’s efficiency in operating the school pools was to centralize management and explore additional revenue opportunities through those communities.
