Disposing of dog waste not only keeps local parks and public spaces safe to walk in but also eliminates the spread of viruses like parvo in pets.
The parvovirus is easily transmitted to dogs through an infected animal’s feces or vomit, is hardy in even Alaska’s temperature fluctuations and can survive 3-7 years in some areas.
Symptoms of the virus can include lethargy, vomiting, severe weight loss, loss of appetite, or loose bowels. A less common form of Parvo can attack the heart muscles of puppies, causing them to die suddenly.
To prevent the spread of parvo, owners should clean up after dogs on walks and should not let animals run loose. There are also parvo vaccines available.
