“Silky” is described as a feisty week-old harbor seal, rescued last week by the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward.

She was found abandoned on mud flats near Kachemak Drive in Homer on April 24.

Husbandry Director Brett Long said they take their time rescuing orphaned sea creatures…

Long: “So generally if its a small orphaned, looks like a pup we watch it for a period of hours or tidal exchanges to make sure the mom isn’t just out foraging somewhere.”

Silky weighed just 18lbs when she was found at two days old. She’s now being fed a special formula five times a day to help her gain weight. Biologists say she appears to have been born prematurely and suffered minor injuries, but she is in a stable condition.
