A search is underway in Cook Inlet after a kayaker was reported missing near Whiskey Gulch on Wednesday night.

Alaska State Troopers say the man was first reported missing at 10:05 p.m. He had been kayaking recreationally in the area when he became separated from his vessel. He was reportedly wearing a life jacket and was last seen drifting southwest into the inlet.

An Alaska Wildlife Troopers aircraft flew over the area Wednesday night, and a local boater located the kayak empty. Since the initial report, U.S. Coast Guard assets have been actively searching the area by air and sea.

As of Thursday morning, the man’s name has not been released. Troopers say additional information may be provided as the search continues.
