Many lawmakers across the United States expressed displeasure about the leaked draft of a Supreme Court decision which points to an overturn of established abortion rights. One of those lawmakers is Alaska’s senior U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, who said her confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court could be shaken if the longstanding abortion rights are overturned. The leaked draft said the U.S. Supreme Court was prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Sen. Murkowski shares reaction to leaked draft:
“If it goes in the direction that this leaked copy has indicated, I will just tell you that it rocks my confidence in the court right now.”
Sen. Murkowski also condemned the leak of the draft to Politico:
“The leak is absolutely reprehensible and needs to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. I really find it shocking that this would happen.”
According to politico, Sen. Murkowski is one of two abortion-rights supporters in the Republican Senate and she said she’d like to see the Senate take up a narrow codification of Roe v. Wade that she introduced earlier this year along with Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). She added that, “I thought it made sense then and I think it makes perhaps more sense now.” At the time, Sen. Murkowski said that she had ‘always supported a woman’s right to choose.’
