Congressional hearings were held on the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska, in a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, demanded accountability from senior military leaders and defense officials in the Biden Administration. Sullivan called it a botched withdrawal and said that the Administration left hundreds of Americans and thousands of America’s Afghan allies stranded and has resulted in a haven for global terrorism in the country.

Sen. Sullivan grilled Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley, and Central Command Commander Kenneth McKenzie:

Milley and McKenzie did acknowledge that they recommended to the President that he leave a force of troops behind, saying that the President rejected the advice and they carried out the order to withdraw.
