Senate Approves Budget Proposal Despite House Democrat Concerns

An agreement that could leave Alaska’s government partially funded has been approved.

 

The Senate voted to accept the budget proposal which the House Democrats opposed, that cuts education funding and rejects negotiated pay raises for labor union contracts next year, among other things.

 

Democratic support is important in the House to authorize a draw from the constitutional budget reserve to cover costs of state government.

 

That draw from the constitutional reserve would be needed to fund state government next year.

 

Monies that had previously been set aside for school funding would be used to cover this year’s budget deficit.

 

The conference committee proposed a blend of funds to fund schools from the coming fiscal year, those funds including $157 million from an in-state gas pipeline fund.
