JUNEAU – After a legislative career spanning more than two decades, Alaska Senate President Gary Stevens has announced he will not seek re-election in 2026.

The longtime Kodiak Republican revealed his decision in his May Capitol Report, stating that after 25 years in public office, “the secret is out.” Stevens said he is ready to close the chapter on his legislative career, adding with characteristic wit, “Aside from the fact that some may be quite pleased to learn that, I do want to thank you for your support over the past quarter century.”

Stevens, who will turn 84 next year, said he plans to continue serving as Senate President through the 2026 session, marking his eighth year leading a bipartisan Senate majority—an unprecedented achievement. He previously held the same leadership role from 2009 to 2014.

A respected statesman known for his collegial style and focus on coastal and educational issues, Stevens also used the announcement to endorse his longtime colleague and friend, Rep. Louise Stutes of Kodiak, as his preferred successor.

“She has enormous experience in the House leadership as Speaker and Rules Chair,” Stevens wrote. “Louise has been a colleague and friend for many years and will well represent our district as she moves to the Senate.”

While the bulk of the report also covered budget details and legislative accomplishments from the recent session—including increased education funding and child care initiatives—Stevens’ retirement announcement will likely be the most talked-about item as lawmakers and constituents look ahead to the 2026 election.

Stevens closed his message with appreciation, writing, “Thank you for your support, understanding, and patience with me over the past 25, soon to be 26 years.”

His departure marks the end of an era for Senate District C, which includes Kodiak, Homer, and much of the southern Kenai Peninsula.
