Setnet Community Seems Cautiously Optimistic After Opener

Today was the opening day for the Kasilof commercial setnet fishery and KSRM caught up with Joe Arness after he’d placed his nets.

Arness: “All and all a great day to be out on the water but unfortunately from what I could observe while I was out there they sort of left the fish someplace else. I didn’t see any real sign of a lot of fish.”

He said from what he’s heard from fellow setnetters, their fishing community is cautiously optimistic that this will be a great fishing season.

Arness: “I think we’re sort of cautiously optimistic. It does seem like there’s more kings in the Kenai I know that Fish and Game from now until the first of July sort of manages the fishery for the Kasilof River and the Kasilof River has gotten good fish so far this year so we’ll see what happens between now and July 1st.”

As of noon today 26,000 sockeye had passed the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Russian River fish weir.
