The first football game on the Alaska schedule and the first football game nationwide was competed in Fairbanks without a hitch; while the number of canceled contests due to covid mitigation has reached four for the opening weekend.

Monroe 38 – Seward 8

Opening with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the Monroe Rams rolled to a 38-8 victory over the Seward Seahawks on Thursday night in Fairbanks.  Monroe’s Carter Barney scored three touchdowns including the kick return and a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Robert McGee.

Week One Football Game Cancellations
In addition to the SoHi vs West Valley and Kenai vs Barrow football games which were canceled due to covid mitigation, add in another Division III contest and a Division I pairing now canceled for the opening weekend of high school football.

Redington vs Kodiak

According to Redington Football…”Out of an abundance of caution and concern for our athlete’s safety and well-being and that of our opponents, the Redington football game scheduled for Friday, August 13 at 7:00pm vs. Kodiak has been canceled”.

Additionally, Redington will suspend all practices and team events for our football program until Wednesday, August 18th.

Kodiak will fill the Kardinals week one game by traveling to Barrow for a Saturday game.

South vs Dimond

Due to a positive test result on the Dimond team in week one of practice and a subsequent loss of mandatory practice time for some of the Lynx, the South vs Dimond game is canceled.  South and Dimond will meet Friday night at Dimond High for a scrimmage game among eligible players.
