The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities reports that construction crews will be performing blasting activities on Monday and Wednesday nights (blasting days are subject to change) between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. As a result of the blasting activities, a full closure of the Seward Highway will be warranted from mile point 17 to 22.5, near Moose Pass. Once the highway is cleaned and inspected for safety, the roadway will be opened to single-lane traffic with flagging operations.
QAP, Southeast Roadbuilders, and DOT crews will be performing rock excavation with explosive agents. They don’t expect a full duration of the closures and will work quickly to reopen to a minimum of one lane with a pilot car as soon as they can.
Daryl Belanger, Project Engineer with QAP writes that, due to unforeseen circumstances, it may result in utilizing the full 9-hour closure to safely reopen the highway to traffic.
The Alaska Department of Transportation, in cooperation with QAP, is working to improve the Seward Highway between MP 17 and 22.5. Project work includes replacing Victor Creek Bridge, rehabilitating Snow River Bridges, as well as installing grading, drainage, paving, signage, and striping. The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2024.
Local traffic will receive accommodations to the best of their ability.
Drivers exercise caution when traveling in all construction zones including watching for changing surfaces, reduced speed limits, driving with headlights on, be alert to and follow directions of flaggers, and allow for additional time when traveling.
