Seward Highway Rockfall Mitigation Project Begins Today; Expect Traffic Delays

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities reports that crews are ramping up the Seward Highway Rockfall Mitigation Project. Starting today between mile point 109.2 – 109.8, which is located near Windy Point, crews will be installing a temporary rockfall barrier between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday through March.

During rockfall mitigation, flagging operations will resume, which means drivers could experience temporary delays in their commute to and from Kenai. In addition, the speed limit will be reduced to accommodate the DOT.

 

The Alaska Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Hi-Tech Rockfall Construction Inc., is performing stabilization work to mitigate rockfall sites along the Seward Highway between Anchorage and Girdwood. This is a multi-year project to address the highest potential rockfall areas between Anchorage and Girdwood. The project is expected to be complete in July 2023.

 

Drivers need to exercise safety in all construction zones, which means being alert to temporary rockfall protection and a concrete barrier on the centerline of the roadway. Be alert and follow directions of flaggers. Drive with headlights on and allow for additional time when traveling.
