Alaska State Troopers arrested a Seward man with multiple arrest warrants on Tuesday after a very brief standoff in which the man attempted to barricade himself inside a residence.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 1, Seward-based troopers received intelligence that 38-year-old John “Mitch” Spiers was located at the residence of his brother, 32-year-old Luke Spiers, in Seward. Mitch had four warrants for his arrest, including a $5,000 arrest warrant for Violating Conditions of Release and three no-bail warrants for 5th Degree Misconduct Involving Controlled Substances (MICS), Petition to Revoke Probation, False Report, 4th Degree Assault, and 4th Degree Criminal Mischief.
According to troopers, after arriving on the scene, Luke Spiers “tried his hardest to deter Troopers and lie about Mitch’s location.” Ultimately, troopers executed a search of the residence with the assistance of Seward Police.
While law enforcement was executing the search, Mitch attempted to barricade himself inside the residence but surrendered without further incident, troopers said.
Suspected methamphetamine was found on Mitch’s person, and additional drugs were located in the residence.
Mitch was remanded for his warrants at Spring Creek Correctional Center, and additional charges will be forwarded against him for drug possession.
Troopers said charges will also be forwarded against Luke for Hindering Prosecution and Misconduct Involving Controlled Substances.
Additional suspects have been identified, and charges are expected for those individuals.
