Seward Man Arrested After Methamphetamine Discovery At Remote Trailhead

A 31-year-old Seward man was arrested on Mar. 7 after a routine call for roadside assistance led to the discovery of illegal drugs.

 

Brandon Hargreaves contacted 911 around 11:51 a.m. on Friday after becoming stranded at a remote trailhead near mile 12 of the Seward Highway. According to Hargreaves, he had been stuck in the snow for several hours, could not afford a tow truck, and was simply seeking a ride back to Seward.

 

The Alaska State Troopers (AST) and Alaska Wildlife Troopers (AWT) responded to the scene and found that Hargreaves’ vehicle had been pulled free by a good Samaritan. However, AST noticed footprints in the snow leading from the vehicle to the nearby tree line while investigating. Suspicious of the situation, troopers waited for Hargreaves to leave before following the footprints into the woods. There, they discovered methamphetamine hidden in a small hole in a fallen tree.

 

Following the discovery, troopers contacted Hargreaves at his residence in Seward. He was arrested on charges including tampering with physical evidence, misconduct involving controlled substances in the fifth degree, and three counts of violating conditions of release.

 

Hargreaves was remanded to Spring Creek Correctional Center and is being held without bail, pending approval of a third-party custodian for his release.
