Fire activity from parts of the 2014 Funny River Fire and 2015 Card Street Fire could be visible to campers according to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.
The fires burned in mosaic patterns and Andy Alexandrou with the Division of Forestry described what causes some of those flare ups.
Alexandrou: “So there’s stringers of unburned fuel on the inside of that fire, in the interior of it. As it warms up or the wind comes up there these stringers smoke up and start to burn and it will put some more smoke columns in the air. It could very well be well inside the perimeter of the fire but people will see that smoke coming up and it will cause interest and concern.”
Those may be visible to people recreating in areas near Tustumena Lake, Skilak Lake, and the Kenai River.
The Card Street Fire remains under the supervision of the Division of Forestry.
A holdover fire from the Funny River Fire is burning just north of Tustumena Lake, two miles east of the Bear Creek Subdivision.
None of the flare-ups spotted pose threats to structures.
Anyone near those fire areas are reminded that weakened trees and deep smoldering duff are dangerous and can cause injuries.
