The 2016 ASAA State Small School Championships, hosted in Fairbanks, opened two days of double-elimination tournament play on Friday, June 3rd.
Six teams representing three conferences are seeded into the Small Schools state tournament bracket based on regular season, conference results. The top two teams from the Southcentral Conference, Homer and Soldotna; two teams from Mid-Alaska, North Pole and Hutchison; and two from Southeast, Juneau and Thunder Mountain.
The Soldotna Stars and Homer Mariners finished regular season play with matching 5-1 Northern Lights Conference records; Homer receives the higher seed based on conference tie-breaker.
The Soldotna Stars opened tournament play against the #1 seed from Southeast, Thunder Mountain.
Thunder Mountain 11 – SoHi 1
The Stars managed only one run against the Falcons in SoHi’s first trip to the state tournament in four years. The loss puts SoHi in the 5:00 p.m. Friday game against Homer. The Mariners lost to Juneau 9-1 in the first round.
The Stars and Mariners play an elimination game; the loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
