The Soldotna Stars football team held the Palmer Moose scoreless in the ASAA First National Bowl Division II Football Championship defeating Palmer 21-0 in the title game on Saturday at Palmer High School.
SoHi 21 – Palmer 0
The Soldotna defense proved impenetrable in the Division II championship game holding the Moose on downs three times in Saturday’s contest, in-route-to a 21-0 victory for the Stars.
On Palmer’s opening drive, the Moose pushed through the SoHi defense to the Star 7-yard line; only to be turned away on downs. The Moose, on their fourth possession of the first half were again stopped on downs and held scoreless for the first half.
In the third quarter, Palmer turned-over the ball on an interception by SoHi’s Jersey Truesdall near the goal line; Palmer remained scoreless.
To open the fourth quarter, The Moose again were denied on fourth down; Palmer remained scoreless.
Late in the fourth quarter, SoHi’s Cody Quelland intercepted Palmer on the Moose twenty yard line and raced to the end zone; Palmer remained scoreless.
While the Moose failed to cross the goal line; SoHi’s offense scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half for a 14-0 halftime advantage.
Brenner Furlong raced 58 yards for the stars first touchdown and a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Aaron Faletoi rumbled for 14 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter. Quelland’s interception return capped the scoring; SoHi 21, Palmer 0.
The Soldotna Stars record a sixth-straight Division II championship and fifth-straight undefeated season. Stars retain traveling trophy for sixth-straight season (Is it truly a traveling trophy?).
Seven SoHi players were named to the ASAA 2017 Division II All-Tournament Team, based on performance through two rounds of playoffs. Players included: Brandon Crowder, Jersey Truesdall, Aaron Faletoi, Jake Marcuson, Wendell Tuisaula, Galen Brantley III, and Brenner Furlong, MVP
Side Note: SoHi opened season with 21-0 shut out of West; West advances to play Bartlett in Division I championship game on Friday, October 20th.
Division III Football Championship
The Barrow Whalers downed the Homer Mariners 20-14 in the Division III football championship game on Saturday at Palmer High School.
Barrow held Homer on four-straight plays inside the five yard line in the games final seconds to secure the victory.
