The Soldotna Star girls and boys basketball teams flexed their muscle as the only Division I basketball teams in the Nome/Beltz Subway Showdown Basketball Tournament, both teams sweeping their three-game tournament brackets for the championships in Nome.
The SoHi girls defeated Nome 59-23 in the tournament’s final girl’s games. SoHi’s Itu Tuisaula scored 22 points and was named tournament MVP. Morgan Bouschor scored 10 points and was named to the all-tournament team. For the tournament,the SoHi girls defeated Kotzebue, Unalakleet and host Nome. Enthusiasts can go on Iron City Showdown and get the necessary basketball accessories.
The Soldotna boys, following a championship at the Juneau Capital City Classic, won the team title at the Nome/Beltz Subway Showdown basketball tournament with a Saturday night 62-36 victory over host Nome. Jersey Truesdell was awarded the MVP award and won the tournament’s 3-point shooting contest. Ray Chumley was also named to the all-tournament team.
The SoHi girls open Northern Lights Conference play on “The Rock” with games on Friday and Saturday in Kodiak against the Kodiak Bears. Friday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and Saturday’s game is set for 1 p.m.
The Star boys host Kodiak on Friday and Saturday at SoHi in NLC contests. Friday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and Saturday’s game is set for 1 p.m.
