The Soldotna Stars girls swim team knocked-off perennial Region III powerhouse Kodiak for the Region III girls team title at the 2015 Region III Swimming and Diving Championships held at Valdez High School.
The SoHi boys finished with a solid second place performance, behind the reigning boys champion Kodiak.
The Kodiak girls had won eight-straight girls Region III titles; SoHi edged out the Bears and Colony Knights.
SoHi girls win championship
Leading the way for the SoHi girls were Sydney Juliussen with a victory in the 50 Freestyle and Claire McElroy with a win in the 100 Breaststroke. The SoHi girls also placed first in a pair of relay events with victories in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay.
Other top state qualifying performances included KCHS’s Mikaela Pitsch earning a state berth by finishing second in 1M Diving competition. The top two divers qualify to the state swim championships.
SoHi boys place second
On the boys side, the SoHi boys were paced by three individual victories and a relay championship. Cody Watkins won the 50 Freestyle, David Hall won the 100 Freestyle and Jacob Hall took first in the 500 Freestyle. The SoHi boys also won the 200 Freestyle Relay.
The 2015 ASAA State Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled for November 6-7 at the Bartlett High School Pool.
All the event first-place finishers and relay team winners automatically qualify to the state meet. For individual events, the next 12 best times statewide earn state berths. For relays, the next four best qualify to state. Official state qualifiers will be posted Monday.
