SoHi Girls Grapple To Pair Of State Wrestling Championships: Division I & II State Wrestling Results

A pair of Soldotna High School girls finished undefeated and claimed girls state championships at the 2019 ASAA State Girls Wrestling Championships.  Male wrestlers from SoHi competed in Division I and male wrestlers from Kenai, Nikiski, Homer and throughout the state battled in Division II.

 

Girls State Wrestling Championships

Trinity Donovan, freshman at Soldotna High School, and Amanda Wylie, senior at Soldotna High School, defeated all challengers to claim individual girls state wrestling championships at the ASAA Girls State Wrestling Championships.

Trinity Donovan, wrestling in the 145-pound weight class, recorded 3-2 decision in the finals against Emily Bellant of North Pole.  Trinity, 21-6 on the season, entered the tournament as the #4 seed and defeated the top two seeds for the 145-pound title.

SoHi senior, Amanda Wylie earned the state championship at 160-pounds in the girls state wrestling tournament.  Amanda defeated Alaina Pete with a pin in the third period.  Amanda entered as the top seed at 160 pounds and completed the season undefeated at 20-0.

 

Division I Boys Wrestling Championships

The Soldotna Stars wrestling team finished eighth in the Division i team scoring; Northern Lights Conference champion Colony High School captured the Division I team championship.

SoHi’s Dennis Taylor the #2 seed in the 152-pound division finished second with a championship finals loss.  Taylor recorded three match victories en route to the finals.

SoHi’s Sean Babitt, wresting at 171-pounds, advanced to the finals with three victories.  The #3 seed at 170-pounds, Sean fell by decision in the championship final.

Other top six finishers for the Stars included:

Zach Burns, 5th at 140 pounds and Hunter Richardson, 6th at 140 pounds.

 

Division II Boys Wrestling Championships

The Kenai Kardinals placed 13th and the Nikiski Bulldogs, 23rd in the Division II team scoring with a possible 44 schools in the Division II classification.  The Homer Mariners placed third behind Division II champion Bethel High School and runner-up Glenallen.

Kenai placed three wrestlers in the top-six of each wrestler’s weight class.  Kenai’s Tucker Vann placed third in the 171-pound weight class, winning his final match with a 3-1 decision.  Owen Wicker placed sixth at 112 pounds and Rocky Sherbahn placed sixth at 215 pounds.

Nikiski’s Koleman McCoughey finished fifth in the 171-pound weight class recording a pin in the final pairing.

 

Al three divisions of Alaska wrestling state championships were held at the Alaska Airlines Center at UAA in Anchorage.
