SoHi Girls Repeat Soccer Conference Championship: Mariner Boys Earn First

The Soldotna girls soccer team repeated as Peninsula Conference soccer champions on Saturday with a decisive 4-0 shut out of Homer.

The Homer boys battled Kenai to a 1-0 Mariner victory and a first conference title for the Homer boys.

 

Division II State Qualifiers

The Soldotna girls and Homer girls earn automatic berths to the ASAA Division II State Soccer Championships.  The Homer boys and Kenai boys qualify to the state tournament which begins play on Thursday, May 23rd.  At-large berths will be announced by ASAA.

The soccer state championships will be played at three different venues: Service High, West High and Eagle River High.

Peninsula Conference Soccer Championship Saturday: Game Results

Girls Championship Game: SoHi Girls 4 – Homer Girls 0

The Soldotna girls defended its Peninsula Conference 2018 title with a decisive 4-0 shut out of the Homer Mariners to claim the 2019 Peninsula Conference championship.

SoHi tallied three goals in the first half with the opening goal scored by Rhys Cannava, the first of Cannava’s three goal, hat trick for the Stars.  Journey Miller scored SoHi’s second goal and goaltenders Katie Delker and Margarida Mendoca shared time in the net to record the shut out.

Final Score: SoHi 4 – Homer 0

The Stars will be the top seed into the girls Division II state soccer tournament.  Homer qualifies as a #2 conference seed.

 

Boys Championship Game: Homer 1 – Kenai 0

The Homer Mariners battled Kenai for a third time in the soccer season and in the boys championship game again only one goal was scored for the victory.

The Mariners produced a first half goal by Tom Gorman and the Mariner defense held-off the Kardinals’ attack for the 1-0 shut out victory.  The Mariners and Kardinals, in the regular season, played to a 1-0 Kenai win and a 1-1- tie–one goal proved enough for the Mariner boys championship.

Final Score: Homer 1 – SoHi 0

Homer earns the #1 Peninsula Conference berth to state; Kenai, the reigning DII state champions, earn the #2 seed and an opportunity to defend their 2018 state title.

 

Girls 3rd Place Game Kenai 2 – Nikiski 0

On the strength of first half goals by Alyssa Bucho and Rileigh Pace, the Kardinal girls defeated Nikiski 2-0 in the girls 3rd place game.  With the victory Kenai’s positioned for one of two at-large berths to the Division II state championships.

 

Boys 3rd Place Game: Nikiski 3 – SoHi 0

The Bulldog boys closed the season with a solid 3-0 shut out of the Soldotna Stars in the 3rd place game.  Michael Mysing produced a three-goal, hat trick for the Bulldogs and Michael Eiter recorded the shut out in goal.
