Outstanding goaltending resulted in an overtime outcome as the Palmer Moose downed SoHi 3-2 in Railbelt Conference hockey action on Thursday at the MTA Center in Palmer.
Palme 3 – SoHi 2
A late Palmer rally resulted in a Railbelt victory for the Palmer Moose 3-2 over SoHi.
The Stars and Moose played scoreless through the first period with the Moose outshooting SoHi 11-5. In the second period, SoHi opened the scoring with a Zeek Miller goal midway through the period. Palmer answered with a goal with only 1:08 remaining to tie the game at 1-1.
The teams battled deep into the third period with SoHi taking a 2-1 lead at 11:25 on a Jace Applehans goal, as Boone Theiler recorded his second assist. Palmer answered with a game-tying goal with one minute remaining, a second goal for Matais Broughton.. In the overtime period, Palmer scored just 1:08 into the extra period on a Kinan Greco goal for the 3-2 Railbelt Conference victory. Palmer hands SoHi its second conference loss and the Moose now stand in first place in the Railbelt.
SoHi’s Tanner Clyde recorded 37 saves on 40 shots; Palmer’s Brody Joseph recorded 21 saves for the Moose.
SoHi returns to the ice on Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Colony at the Menard Arena. On Saturday, the Stars face Wasilla at the Brett Arena in Wasilla.
Kenai 3 – Wasilla 6
Kenai struggled to score through the first period allowing a 2-0 lead for the Wasilla Warriors on goals by Owen Hoyt and Branson Starheim.
Reagan Graves scored Kenai’s first goal midway through the second period for a 2-1 Wasilla lead. The Warriors added three straight goals to close the period with a 5-1 advantage.
Gavin Liles and Logan Mese closed the gap to 5-3 in the third, before a final Wasilla added a final goal for the 6-3 victory in non-conference hockey.
Kenai’s Evyn Witt recorded 19 saves; Kole Kite recorded 20 saves for the Warriors.
Kenai travels to Anchorage on Friday to play East High at 4:30 p.m. at Ben Boeke Arena. On Saturday, the Kardinals battle Railbelt Conference Palmer at 12:30 p.m. at the MTA Center in Palmer.
