The ASAA Division I and Division II Track & Field Championships opened competition on Friday at Palmer High School and the Soldotna Stars and Nikiski Bulldogs claim early state championships.
SoHi senior Emily Pieh bested the field in the Division I girls discus event to earn a gold medal and a state championship. Emily Pieh threw a personal best 129′ 7″ on her fifth attempt, knocking-out reigning champion Alissa Pili of Dimond High.
Nikiski jumper Aaron McCullom won the Division II boys triple jump with a personal best jump of 41′ 1″.
In other field event finals on Friday:
SoHi’s Galen Brantley III placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 45′ 8 1/4″. SoHi’s Melvin Loyd placed fifth at 45′ 2 3/4″
SoHi’s Ituau Tuisaula finished fourth and Bailey Leach finished sixth in the girls discus.
SoHi’s Aliann Schmidt and Oliva Schwenk placed seventh and eighth in the girls high jump.
Kenai’s Karl Danielson placed sixth in the boys triple jump with a jump of 40′ 1.25″.
In the running prelim on Friday:
SoHi senior Brenner Furlong posted the fastest time in the 400M and set a new SoHi record at 50,43; Furlong also made the finals in the 200M.
SoHi’s Brittany Taylor qualifies in the 400M with the second, fastest time and a personal best 59.94. Brittany also posted the third fastest 200M time.
SoHi’s Sophie Thomas qualifies in both the 100M and 300M hurdle events.
Kenai’s Haley Maw ran 12.87 to advance to the 100M final. Karl Danielson qualifies in the 400M and Brooke Satathite will race in the finals in the 800M.
Kenai’s Jarett Wilson posted the eighth fastest time in the 110M hurdles and SoHi’s Logan Schrader clocked the sixth fastest time in the 300M hurdles.

Kenai junior Jaycie Calvert placed 7th in the 3200M final on Friday.
Nikiski thrower Kaitlyn Johnson placed second in the girls Division II discus.
Bulldog Ian Johnson placed seventh in the boys discus.
Nikiski’s Jack Sulliger qualifies for Division II 400M dash.
Bulldog junior Bethany Carstens finished sixth in the girls high jump and qualifies for the 300M hurdles
Other runners may move into the finals to fill empty lanes on Saturday.
The ASAA Division I and Division II Track & Field Championships continue on Saturday with field event finals beginning at 9 a.m. and the running finals scheduled to begin with th e4X800M relays at 10:30 a.m.
