After implementing solar power trash compactors last year the City of Soldotna has seen significant reduction in labor costs.
Director Andrew Carmichael with City of Soldotna Parks and Rec explained labor costs had been cut by about 88%.
Carmichael: “They have a mechanism in them that also not only in addition to compact the trash using solar power but they also have an option that we purchased where it sends an email notification once a day that says ok I’m full come get me. So instead of having someone have a staff drive over to where the trash can is to see if its full on some of our not normally travelled paths we get an email.”
Carmichael said that the City purchased ten of the trash compactors last year for $4,000 each and have deployed five around the city so far.
He added that the units work well all throughout the winter even on the shortest and coldest days.
