The Binkley roundabout at Redoubt has new additions in an effort to slow traffic entering the intersection.
Public works department Project Manager Lee Frey said traffic was impeding the bike lanes near the entrance to the roundabouts.
Frey: “Basically most roads are 12 feet wide typically and because we have bike lanes on most of our collector roads in the city, it kind of makes the lane a little wider which allows people to hug the right side of the lane coming through there so they can make more of a straight shot going through the roundabouts.”
The installations are being tested on the Redoubt intersection first and then may be added to the two others.
We asked if those will be removed during the winter.
Frey: “They can be removed, we’re probably going to wait and see how they go through the winter. It’s possible we could remove them, that will be a maintenance department call as to whether they remove them or not.”
Frey said so far the concrete islands are achieving the city’s goal of slowing down traffic.
