Soldotna Airport Undergoing Prep for Apron Improvements

The Soldotna Airport is currently undergoing some areas being cleared in order to prepare for improvements to the apron next summer.

City engineer Kyle Kornelis said Double A Construction is doing the preliminary work.

Kornelis: “The city was successful in getting a FAA grant to rehabilitate a lot of the broken up asphalt at the airport, part of that project will be taking that rotomilled asphalt and using it as sub base on a little bit of new apron area, so they are clearing some of the trees in preparation to create a little bit more apron area where that crushed asphalt will be going.”

The clearing contract to Double A Construction for just over $19,000 and the asphalt work contract to Alaska Roadbuilders for just under $3 million was awarded at the December 10 Soldotna City Council meeting.

Kyle said there will be some impact of the project on airport activities next summer.

Kornelis: “We’re going to have to work quite closely with folks who use the airport and fixed based operators, we’ve reached out to some of them already in developing a phasing plan to eliminate some of the conflicts but as we move forward with the construction, we’ll be working quite closely with everyone out there to help minimize the disruption but it’ll be a welcome change, the asphalt is in pretty dire need or rehabilitation so I think everybody will recognize the need for it and appreciate it finally getting done.”
