The City of Soldotna recently completed an expansion of its cemetery that was opened in 2011.
City Clerk Shellie Saner…
Saner: “That included an expansion of 110 cremains plots, 49 flat marker plots and 51 upright marker plots. The cemetery was originally designed with 108 regular plots, a columbarium niche with 64 niches and a veterans section that had 20 cremains plots and 24 regular plots in it. So because of reservations and future planning we quickly ran out of space over there.”
For over sixty years the city did not have its own cemetery, so homesteaders and historical Soldotna figures were laid to rest in other locations.
Saner says the popularity of the cemetery plots and demand for reservations is a result of the decades that Soldotna residents had to wait to remember the lives of their friends and family within the city.
The city began the expansion last summer and it took approximately six months to complete.
Reservations for the cemetery can be made through the clerk’s office.
