Soldotna Considers Simplifying Townhouse Construction Codes

The City of Soldotna is taking a look at its housing codes, with an ordinance recently introduced for the city council to consider simplifying the construction of townhouses.

 

Based on a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission, Soldotna City Council introduced the ordinance to amend city code at the Wednesday, October 14, meeting.

 

In a memo to councilors, City Planner John Czarneski wrote, “One of the goals in our comprehensive plan is to investigate code changes that promote and encourage a diversity (size, design, cost) of housing options for people of all ages, incomes and household size. Currently, traditional townhouse dwelling units do not exist within the City.”

 

He added that currently the codes regarding multi-family district housing are confusing and that the suggestions within the ordinance would clarify those.

 

Townhouses are defined as family dwelling units constructed in a series or group of two or more, separated from an adjoining unit(s) by an approved wall(s).

 

Public comment on the ordinance to amend city code allowing townhouses will be taken on October 28.
