Soldotna Council Member Meggean Bos-Marquez announced Wednesday night that she will be resigning from her seat on the government body this summer.

Cm. Marquez: “My husband has taken a job out of state so we will be moving and so June will be my last month on council. The reason why I went with June is so that there is enough notification time for the general election in October but I just wanted everyone to know that I will be leaving the state pretty soon.”

City Clerk Shellie Saner says once Marquez’s official resignation is accepted by council members, the remaining councilors have 30 days to appoint an applicant to the seat, according to Alaskan statutes and Soldotna Municipal Code.

Applicants for the vacancy will be interviewed during a City Council meeting, the Council will vote by ballot and the selected applicant will take their place at the dais. The appointed term is only until the next regular election, which is October 4, 2016.

If the appointee chooses to file a declaration of candidacy they will be up for election by Soldotna voters in the regular October election.

Marquez’s departure means there will be four seats on the City Council on October’s ballot, including the spots currently held by Keith Baxter, Regina Daniels, and Tim Cashman.
