The City of Soldotna is getting a facelift this year, starting with more descriptive signage. Austin Johnson, with the City’s Planning Department, said the old utility pole banners were desperately in need of replacement…
Johnson: “So there’s going to be four banners at the intersection of, for instance, Binkley. Two of them will be solid colors that say Binkley, two of them will be cool photos that say Binkley, and our hope is to really get folks, locals and residents and tourists, whoever’s here, to kind of explore town and go around to different parts, not just shoot through the highway but maybe go get a coffee or whatever.”
Those will be scattered around the city. At the main entrances to the downtown area, there will also be “gateway” signs…
Johnson: “Those will be three points along the highways in town, one on the Spur coming from Kenai, one coming from Anchorage, and one coming from the south from Homer on K-Beach.”
And the more typical wayfinding signs will be upgraded…
Johnson: “Kind of the traditional signs that say follow this road, cut up on Binkley to go to the hospital or the library or what have you.”
Johnson said some signs will start appearing over the next few months, with the entire plan to be completed over three years.
